Written in March 2026, this story examined emerging plans for border infrastructure in Big Bend National Park at a time when proposed physical wall construction appeared to be scaling back. Rather than treating the revisions as the end of the issue, I focused on the surveillance technology and infrastructure that remained planned for the park and the concerns surrounding their potential effects on conservation, dark skies and the surrounding community.
In the months following my reporting, construction inside Big Bend National Park and the broader region drew significant public protests, legal challenges and national attention.
